Classroom Management
All six sections of first grade will be implementing the same behavior management system. This creates uniformity among all the classrooms when students travel to and from reading class and specialists. Each classroom, regardless of teacher or subject, has the same "DRAGON ZONE"
expectations and card system for students.
Card System
We use a colored card system to manage student behaviors throughout the day. It handles much like a stoplight:
Pink: Above Expectations! Wow! What an amazing day!!!
Green: Great Day! You are in the DRAGON ZONE!
Yellow: Slow Down. After one verbal reminder to make better choices, and the behavior continues the card turns to yellow.
Orange: Stop and Think. The student has been given a chance to slow down, but continues to make poor choices. Depending on the severity, the child will usually be asked to sit out until we can talk about changing the behavior around.
Red: Stronger Action will be taken. This may mean a telephone call, note, email home or an office referral.
**The student CAN return their cards back to green! This system is all about making choices and being responsible for your actions. As long as the student tries his/her hardest it will be reflected in their daily card.

Dragon Zone Expectations
Throughout the day students will have the chance to earn Dragon Zone slips.Students who receive dragon zone slips are demonstrating a positive behavior that is respectful, responsible, cooperative, and/or safe.
RESPECTFUL I am quiet when the teacher is talking. I do what is asked of me, without arguing.
RESPONSIBLE I have all the things I need, and I am ready to learn!
COOPERATIVE I can work well with others. It's all about TEAMWORK!
SAFE I walk safely to where I am supposed to be. I make good choices.
Good Citizen Awards
In addition to our behavior management system we will be implementing monthly Good Citizen Awards for first graders. The purpose of this award is to acknowledge students who consistently demonstrate the Dragon Zone Expectations: Respectful, Responsible, Cooperative and Safe! These students will be recognized in front of the whole first grade, receive their award and have it posted along the first grade hallway for everyone to see.
Minion Points
Throughout the day, the students transition to several classes including specialists, lunch, recess and reading. During these times our class can earn Minion points for our class jar. Minion points are based on whole class behavior and participation. We can also earn Minion points for compliments by other adults in the hallways and during school-wide events in the auditorium. Once we fill our Minion Jar and cover up our naughty Minion, we will have a whole class celebration!
